Set an example for peace
In 2000, after the start of the second Intifada dedicated people in Switzerland founded the Campaign Olive Oil. Through the sales of Palestinian olive oil, they wanted to support farmers in the West Bank and call attention in Europe for the precarious situation. Even if only little - it was supposed to be a contribution for peace in the Mideast. gebana has been organising the import of the olive oil since the start of the project and distributes it to end consumers, stores and restaurants.
At the purchase of the olive oil gebana works together with the Campaign Olive Oil and the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC). The Palestinian non-governmental organisation is active in the area of agricultural development: it consults groups of farmers concerning the cultivation and the structural organisation and works on technical improvements as for example new oil presses. PARC is also active in social and environmental issues. These include biological farming, fair trade, pre-financing of the harvest, purchase guarantee and long-term trade relations, up to 25% higher prices for the farmers and fair wages in the processing facilities.
Invest in quality
With the revenue of the olive oil local specific projects are financed. An example is the Quality Plus Initiative, which allowed the farmers in three villages the change to biological agriculture as well as the certification and it improved the quality substantially. Through this, the olive oil now has the quality category Extra Vergine. Also projects in the area of medical supply, rural development as well as female and youth employment are supported.
