Fair trade must not become mere lifestyle
In this article Ursula Brunner objects to Fairtrade as a fashion trend. Although she regards the fact that fair trade has become socially acceptable as progress, she argues that after the pioneering phase fair trade has now been institutionalized and bureaucratized. In the process it is forgotten that Fairtrade is a political movement. For people in the South to be better off, political framework conditions are also needed. “Fair trade must not degenerate into mere lifestyle,” says Ursula Brunner.
There is also a correction to the article in the NZZ:
Incorrect is: “Shortly thereafter the female pioneers of Gebana AG stopped and in 1997 handed over their company for fair trade to younger generations. These today continue the company under the name Terrafair.”
Correct is: The gebana AG is still called gebana AG. Under the name Terrafair the former association gebana reformed. They today represent the consumers' perspective in fair trade. They carry out active information and educational work on fair trade, research production conditions, trading mechanisms and consumption, and make this knowledge accessible to a broad public.
We would like to point out that the journalist Dorothee Vögeli, despite the request from Ursula Brunner and gebana not to write about private matters, could not refrain from doing so.
