Cocoa Seedlings for Togo's Farmers
Because a cocoa tree only yields an interesting harvest six years after planting, the young trees must be planted in time to secure long-term yields. gebana therefore supports its cocoa producers with seedlings that were paid for from the CO2 compensation for the fresh pineapples.
Around 320 farmers of the cocoa cooperative Scoops Procab benefited from the planting campaign this June and received young trees. Trainings also showed the cocoa producers how to better care for their fields and combat diseases in a natural way.
With the money from the 2015 Fair Trade premium, the cooperative has now decided to open a nursery in each village of its members. Together they order the seeds, raise the seedlings and also organize the planting next spring. This way, the farming families can replace old and dead trees in the future even without external support.
The farmers in Togo deliver their top-quality organic cocoa to gebana, which has the finest confectioner chocolate produced in Switzerland.
