Students with Beards
The president and the treasurer of the cooperative buy themselves a Bostitch, white paper, a pen, a correction pen, a calculator and a cash book. That is a kind of booklet in which one records all movements in the cash register and notes the new closing balance. Immediately they busily begin to staple the receipts from the past months in chronological order onto A4 sheets. The next day they then sit like two schoolboys at a table next to each other, bent over the booklet and try to write income and expenses into the cash book. From time to time they call me over to clarify questions and to check their work. They have to laugh themselves and say: "We are students with grey beards. This is our first lesson in accounting and we want to learn more."
