Smallholder farmers usually own only individual trees. Nevertheless, alongside production that is largely intended for subsistence, these form a important because constant source of income. A mature tree produces up to 50kg of nuts per year over several decades.
gebana offers macadamia broken nuts. What does that mean? During the elaborate cracking of the nuts, it sometimes happens that a nut is slightly damaged or halved. That these nuts, which are not quite perfect in appearance, can be sold at lower but still fair prices represents a real added value for local processing. Because these are harder to sell — the market wants perfect goods.
We want to offer our customers excellent quality products. But we believe that a half nut at a lower price makes sense for both sides: the consumer gets a very good — just not perfect — product more cheaply, and the producer finds a market for exactly this goods. We call that fair!
