After a two-year development phase, gebana Afrique was able in July, in collaboration with the French NGOs RONGEAD and CEFREPADE , to put a new technology into use that addresses both problems. In a smoldering-burn process, a gas is produced from the nut shells that supplies the energy for the cashew facility. At the same time, a kind of charcoal is produced that can be used elsewhere. The amount of wood saved annually and the additionally produced charcoal massively reduce the CO2 emissions from cashew processing.
After the successful introduction, development is currently continuing: How can the new technology be used optimally? Cashew production generates about four times more shell waste than is needed to cover its own energy consumption. The additional energy could, for example, be used to dry the mangoes and the charcoal could be distributed to the local population as an inexpensive firewood substitute.
