Where did the idea for our own online shop come from?
Jonathas Baerle: This has been an old dream of ours; we always talked about selling our products directly to consumers. But due to the company’s economic situation, this project never had priority. Now, after we were able to improve our results and work with even more farmers, it became possible to make this dream come true.
How long did the implementation take and when does the shop go live?
We worked on the shop for ten months; on Monday, 11.2.2019 it finally goes live at www.gebana.com.br
Which products will you sell?
There are initially 3 packages that can be purchased. The “Everyday Box” contains rice, beans, wheat and corn flour, coffee and sugar. The “Health Box” contains chia seeds, flaxseed, oats and soy lecithin. The “Healthy Heart Box” includes dried bananas, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts and walnuts.
Which of these are produced by your own farmers?
Almost all of them; only the nuts we buy from external partners.
How has the organic market developed in Brazil and what are the prospects for the future? The organic market in Brazil is currently recording growth rates of around 20%. Many people are looking for alternative foods. We believe this growth will certainly continue for at least the next five years.
What share does gebana Brazil currently sell wholesale on the national market?
We sell 50% of our volumes on the domestic market.
What do you see as the biggest challenges regarding online sales?
We need more suppliers and we must make gebana known as a direct-shipping brand. And then show people the work we do with smallholder farmers.
What plans and goals do you have with the online shop?
One goal is to give our farmers more opportunities in production, so that they also produce additional organic products and we can purchase them. We want to improve our margin with the shop and make gebana known as a food brand in Brazil. Finally, we want to build new partnerships, both for production and for investments.
Thank you very much and good luck!
