With the aim of securing the quality of the dates and the incomes of the farmers in the Tunisian oases in the long term, gebana AG, together with gebana Maghreb, has launched a project to reduce water consumption and improve soil quality. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the German Investment and Development Company DEG and is coordinated by gebana.
Phase 1: Initially, different approaches for more efficient water use and for improving soil quality are evaluated in collaboration with various experts. Partners here include, among others, the Tunisian institutions Centre Technique National des Dattes and Centre Technique de l’Agriculture Biologique.
Phase 2: Subsequently, a pilot system is installed on the plots of twelve selected farming families. These plots are also used as test fields for planting additional crops such as olives, figs, citrus fruits, pomegranate or various vegetables. The so-called multi-tier cultivation is intended to improve soil quality, prevent evaporation through shading, diversify the crops and thus generate alternative income opportunities for the farmers.
Phase 3: In a third phase, a total of 500 smallholder farmers, processing plant employees and students are trained on water saving, soil improvement, organic farming and quality assurance.
