These questions kept us very busy this winter when we informed you that we were exceptionally transporting the fresh pineapples from Togo to Europe by air freight. The reason for our exceptional decision was that the shelf life of pineapples after harvest is very limited and we saw no other way to offer our customers the delicious fruit in first-class quality (learn more about our decision here). We asked you, our customers, to tell us your opinion about our decision and also to take part in our survey.
We would like to thank you for your active participation and, of course, share the results of the survey with you.
We at gebana have continued to discuss this question intensively. We formed a committee, were in contact with climate experts and also incorporated your opinion into our discussions. The following decisions have been made:
- Air freight must remain the exception.
- If we fly by exception, we will inform our customers transparently about it.
- The CO2 should be compensated fivefold. This ensures a guaranteed positive CO2 balance and makes exceptions "hurt".
- We set up a special account for compensation and compensate from it in projects that we can control ourselves.
We want to ensure that our decisions not only comply with the gebana guidelines, but also that there is a constant internal discourse about the meaningfulness of our work. The committee will therefore meet regularly from now on to discuss such and similar questions in detail. Furthermore, we also want to ask our customers for their opinion on important decisions in the future.
