Intensive manual labor or a lack of technology are major challenges in organic farming. Research and development in this area are usually geared toward conventional needs, which often causes organic agriculture to lag behind technological developments. The organic cashew farmers in Benin are interested in mechanical assistance to remove weeds from their cashew fields and to cultivate between the trees. This interest is shared by the organic cashew farmers from Benin and the smallholder organic soybean farmers from Brazil.
In Brazil, considerable progress has been made over the years. For example, a kind of weed-eliminating tractor using electric shock for use in organic soybean cultivation was developed. In the past years, there have been various meetings between Brazilian and European organic soybean producers as well as agricultural machinery manufacturers, which is slowly but steadily driving development forward. Let us hope that in the future there will also be technological developments that make life easier for Tamou Yarou.
