Meanwhile four caregivers are employed who during the harvest season look after about 70 children daily, of whom 15 are infants. They play and sing and three times a day the children receive a bouille with milk and carbohydrates.
For this the mothers who work in the cashew factory pay 1500 CFA per child per month. The money is given by the women directly to the daycare manager after wages are paid. The small contribution is necessary so that there is a certain commitment to bringing the children, no neighbors' children are taken along and the value of the work of the daycare staff is appreciated. The employees' wages are not covered by this – the shortfall is paid by gebana Afrique.
How high this daycare contribution would be was discussed extensively with the women's representatives. They then carried the discussions into the subgroups and also consulted with management. After several meetings everyone finally agreed on these 1500 CFA, which corresponds to a day's wage of a production employee. For this the bouilles, which otherwise cost 50 CFA per meal, are free. The women bring lunch for themselves and their children from home.
