Fresh organic Fuerte avocados from 20 family farmers in the Chania region on the Greek island of Crete. The growers cultivate the avocados on very small plots averaging 1.2 hectares.
Avocado trees in Crete usually need to be watered from August to mid-September. In dry years, this can even be as early as July or May – 2025 is one such year. During the other months, there is enough rainfall and soil moisture for the trees to survive without irrigation.
The family farmers rely on drip irrigation and are in weekly contact with the University of Crete, which issues recommendations on irrigation. The families are also working on rainwater storage systems so that they will no longer need to use groundwater in the long term.
The packaging facility for the avocados is not connected to the electricity grid. The necessary energy is provided by solar cells, making the facility CO2-neutral. In addition, the avocados are cleaned without water. The facility is operated by three of the family farmers.
The avocados arrive hard, so you will need to ripen the fruit yourself.

Use & preparation
- Fresh avocado on bread with a little lime juice and salt and pepper. A little nut puree rounds off the dish.
- Sweet in a smoothie or make into corn chips as a classic guacamole: Mash ripe avocados with a fork, season with lime juice, salt and pepper.
Storage & shelf life
When stored in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator at a cool temperature, the fruit keeps for about 10 days. Store the avocados that you would like to eat within the next few days at room temperature in a paper bag together with an apple. If the flesh gives slightly when pressed, the fruit is ripe. Check the avocados for bruises and minor damage as soon as you receive them. If you find mould, remove the affected fruits from the crate.
