Using organic farming techniques means we get better prices for our coffee.
"We employ two workers during harvest time, and my family helps me with the rest," says Efrain Ichin Gomez. "This year I sold 829 kilos of coffee," he explains. The farmer and his wife also grow maize and beans and keep chickens for themselves. Climate change poses the biggest challenge for this family with three children. "We have to replace plants that dry out or die of disease more and more frequently," says Gomez. "The steep slopes on our land make the work more difficult."
People in Europe drink more than 30 billion cups of coffee a year. Millions of family farmers grow the coffee to meet this huge demand. Far too many of these families live in abject poverty because the price of coffee is too low.
