The goal of our SLOW FASHION CONTAINER project is to buy an entire container of organic cotton in Mali and to produce 100’000 T-shirts out of it. We follow the work of Djènèba Diallo, farmer in Mali, who will grow the organic cotton for us. From there we document every production step of the shirts until their delivery in about one year from now. The T-shirts were designed by British designer and activist Katharine Hamnett.
Producing clothes organically and fair increases the income of local farmers. And that improves their working conditions and their living standards as well.
Helvetas is a pioneer in producing fairtrade-certified organic cotton and has been working with small-scale cotton farmers for over 16 years. The SLOW FASHION CONTAINER campaign aims to make production processes fully transparent. It documents the entire production chain of a sustainably produced t-shirt from cotton sowing and cultivation in Mali to spinning and weaving by fairtrade-certified producers in Greece and Macedonia. The campaign ends with the delivery of the final product next year.
And because the farmers in Mali don’t use pesticides, this campaign even helps to take care of the environment.
Today, cloth shopping is often a quick and unreflective process. People buy clothes, wear them and throw them away. The SLOW FASHION CONTAINER movement tries to counteract such trends by making the production of a fair and organically produced T-shirt fully transparent.
That’s why we launched the SLOW FASHION CONTAINER project on fashion revolution day 2016. This day remembers the victims of the catastrophic Rana Plaza building collapse in Bangladesh in 2013, where thousands of textile workers were killed and many more were injured. We hope that this campaign increases people’s awareness for fair and sustainable cotton production and helps to prevent such tragic incidents.
But our T-shirts are not only produced fair but are also stylish: British fashion designer and fairtrade activist Katharine Hamnett, famous for her slogan shirts, has provided us with an exclusive design. And the popular Basic- and Polo-shirts by Helvetas are available as well.
